As a Traffic Engineer, you are requested to prepare a ‘City Traffic Report for Future Developments’ highlighting your city’s top 3 traffic related problems and possible solutions for them. Especially, your report should aim to highlight the key traffic related problems in your city and their trends from the analysis of actual recent data. This is an advanced level course, so any suitable strategy can be picked and used by the student, and what a student chooses is up to them. In addition, you also need to collect actual data for your analysis. Actual data can be obtained from various sources such as online resources or annual reports of your city council or by directly contacting a key official in the transport planning/traffic management section of your council. After you identify three traffic related problems and their trends you must propose at-least one remedial measure of transport infrastructure development project for each of them to ease the problem. Give your justification for your proposed solution.
The report should clearly identify the following:
Introduce your city, including its location, size and population. (100-200 words) – Hint City Name: Adelaide City
Results from the analysis of relevant data from your city to highlight most serious traffic related problems (top 3) and their trends (500 – 600 words)
Propose and justify at least one feasible solution or future transport infrastructure development project that can be used to improve the current conditions that you have highlighted (300 – 400 words)
Your concisely written report should be 800 to 1200 words in length (not including references, which should still be part of your report).
Hint 1: Give focus to your city and not to a particular highway. However, if you can get traffic flow data on major routes to your CBD area then they can also be used systematically to highlight the increasing trends. Similarly, suitable strategies need to be employed to highlight your arguments. For example, the following parameters could generally be used to highlight the increasing level of traffic congestion in a city:
1. Rate of city’s population growth
2. Increases in traffic flow (AADT) into the city
3. Growth rate of workers living in the city
5. Changes in average peak hour car occupancy (i.e., # of occupants /car)
6. Growth of daily commuters to city via private vehicles (e.g., Occupancy and AADT).
7. Increasing trend of travel time from a close by sub-urban area to the city centre
8. Growth in proportion of commuters using motorways
9. Average peak hour trip time with in the city
10. Changes in average speed during peak hours over the recent years
12. Increases in registered motor vehicles in the city
13. Growth of fuel consumptions by the city’s motorists
14. Growth of city’s employment rate
