Theory Review Assignment | Homework For You
The theory review po5005 The theory review requires students to choose two of the theories explored in the module to interpret a recent real life event in international relations. Theories are often compared to ‘lenses’. When one looks through a particular theoretical lens, events and processes in the world appear a certain way. This exercise invites you to look through two particular theoretical lenses at a specific issue. You will need to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the theories under discussion and an accurate understanding of the empirical issue.
Step 1: Examine the case study bellow: The rise of China as a global power
Step 2: Use TWO theories to analyze and interpret your case study: Neo-realism (Structural Realism Neo-liberalism (Liberal Institutionalism) Guidelines: Think about the characteristics of the two theories you have chosen, their understanding of the world, and how this relates to some of the key themes associated with the case study you have chosen. Think about the ‘theory as a lens’. If you look at your chosen case study, through the ‘lenses’ of the two theories you have chosen, what kind of picture/story emerges? Different theories will produce different interpretations of the same case study!
The most important aspect of writing the theory review is a solid understanding of the two chosen theories and how to apply these to your case study: how to analyse and interpret the case study through the theories. The reading list provided includes a detailed account of sources for each theory; this should be your main research tool. DO NOT simply search online for accounts of the theories. To research your case study you will need to search the library catalogue for relevant academic journal articles and books. This type of independent research is an essential skill to develop. The theory review MUST be fully and properly referenced, using the Harvard style. Bibliography is excluded from the word count.
What you should NOT DO! Do not simply describe the theories and a case study; you are expected to apply the theories to the case study. Do not provide an extensive description of the case study. It is better to use the theories for that. Do not attempt to complete the theory review without engaging with the key theory literature suggested in the reading list. Points will be deducted for not using the core IR theory text books! Do not use obscure internet sources! Marking criteria: What am I looking for in your theory review? A strong understanding of the theories: you are expected to provide an accurate and well informed representation of the two theories and the case study chosen.
You will need to look beyond the core text books to help solidify your knowledge and understanding. Errors of fact and misrepresentations of the theories need to be avoided. Good research skills: the theory review requires careful researching of the theories and the case study. You should base your analysis on a range of advanced academic sources (books and journals), listed in the module reading list. Make sure to use the core reading given for each theory! Reputable online sources (such as BBC, the Economist, Al Jazeera, etc.) can be used ONLY if there are no other academic sources available; and DO NOT over use these. In addition, DO NOT use unreliable online sources. Analysis and argument: you will need to demonstrate your ability to use the theories to help you interpret the case study.
Use the theories as lenses to develop a more nuanced and sophisticated analysis and explanation for the case study you are examining. Your analysis needs to be logical, coherent and supported by appropriate evidence. You will need to think carefully about the structure of your review and the organisation of your analysis. Written expression: you will need to show your ability to convey complex ideas and analysis in a clear, concise and coherent manner. Grammar, punctuation, proper structuring of sentences and paragraphs are all important elements. USE THE SOURCES ATTACHED. Only use those attached for the assignment, no other external sources.
