Unit 3: Analyzing Spread and Variation Discussion
Please complete the following steps for your first discussion post and response.
Watch the video Analyzing Spread and Variation (Measures of Center, 2013)
In the video, there is an example demonstrating how two similar restaurants have very different patterns of variation. Watch the video. Consider how the video discussed the variation in sales and how that corresponds to what you learned in Unit 2 “Measures of Dispersion”. Then answer the following questions:
- What is the most likely cause of variation for the spread of sales?
- What other causes might there be for such a wide variation?
For your initial post, identify (but don’t collect) a type of dataset that might vary significantly from its mean. (Examples may be adult’s weights or BMIs, a company’s sales, or the number of pieces of mail you receive in a week. Using your imaginary dataset, answer the following questions:
- What is a brief description of the data?
- How much would you expect the data to vary?
- What might the causes of the variation be?
Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

In the video, south west plaza sold more and manhattan beach sold less. I believe that is due to location and price. South west plaza location is located in a shopping mall. When people are walking and shopping they tend to get hungry so the restaurant’s location is convenient. On the other hand the manhattan beach location is on the beach, so maybe during the winter season, sales drop. I also assume that the manhattan beach prices are more due to the cost of the location, on the other hand the south west plaza sould be cheaper due to having a small space.
Hospital admissions may vary significantly from its mean depending on the season and holidays. During the winter season the hospital is busy admitting patients due to the outbreak of the flu, pneumonia and snow birds (snow birds are people that travel to florida for the winter season to experience a warmer season). During the holidays, the hospital’s admission numbers are low due to people not wanting to be admitted to the hospital during the holidays but after the holidays the numbers tend to rise again.

In the video above, I believe that location, accessibility, and price played a major role in the hike in sales at Wahoo in southwest plaza over the Manhattan beach store. The southwest plaza is in the shopping mall and can be easily accessible to many shoppers. The Manhattan beach on the other side is restrictive because of where it is located – on the beach. Customers tend to stop at the southwest plaza more often because it is more convenient than driving to the beach just to go it. Also, accessibility might also play another role in the spread in the sale. The south west plaza in located in the mobile with a possibility of free and easy parking, the Manhattan beach store’s parking might be restricted. Knowing that there limited parking in Manhattan beach (because I used to live there), customers might have to pay for parking or valet or not easily find a parking spot. Lastly, I believe that price might also played a major role in the spread. While the price in the mall might be cheaper because it is located in the mall, the Manhattan Beach store might be a little bit pricey because of its location – upscale and fine dining area.
My data compares the sale of video games among major electronic stores like Walmart, Best Buy, Fry;s and Amazon. I expected the data to significantly vary. This is because of so many variables like price competition, free shipping, no sales tax, and different vendors on Amazon.
