Religious Literacy Signature Assignment Guidelines

Assignment Parameters from the Department of Religious Studies at Cabrini University

1. Students must compose a research essay approximately 5 pages in length (this doesn’t include the bibliography).

2. Students must demonstrate a diachronic understanding of the history, the institutions, the texts, the rituals, the practices, and the vernacular traditions and social justice heritage of Christianity with a specific emphasis on Roman Catholicism.

3. The paper requires students to perform academic research that proceeds along the following sequence: Begin with at least three or four reference texts (dictionaries, encyclopedias specifically involving religion, history and/or culture); the reference research should lead to at least one scholarly, book-length monograph; which should, in turn, lead the student to two scholarly articles; and one subject-relevant Internet site.

4. The assignment must include reflection based on the student’s own belief system (religious or otherwise, as the case may be).

Religious Literacy Signature Assessment- 200 points

This is a research paper through which you will complete a formal process.  After your thesis is approved, students will move on to an annotated bibliography before a rough draft and a final draft.

                    Step one: Thesis  (25 points) due May 22^th

                    Step two: Annotated Bibliography (25 points) due June 3^rd

                    Step three: Rough draft (50 points) June 12^th

                    Step Four: final paper (100 points) June 26^th

Students are to write a research paper concerning Humanae Vitae which is found on blackboard under “Course Content”. Students must read the document and write a paper on the importance of the document and what it contributes to the discussion on Roman Catholicism. Students must also find their own voice and either write if they agree or disagree with the document and why they have chosen their viewpoint.

In order to follow the strict guidelines from the Department of Religious Studies at Cabrini, I would ask that your paper meets the above four assignment parameters.

A research paper is an original piece of academic writing. It is your own idea and research on a topic. You as the researcher must use analysis and interpretation of your research findings to write a coherent and well thought out paper.

Students must cite any idea or words that are not their own to avoid plagiarism. If ever in doubt, please cite. For more information on plagiarism or citations, please see your librarian.

Students must have an annotated bibliography. If you do not know what this is, ask your librarian. Librarians are there to help you. They are a great tool to help you find your academic research for this paper.

Wikipedia is never an acceptable form of research. Therefore, citations of Wikipedia are not allowed in the paper.
