HNN300 Child And Adolescent Health Assignment | Homework For You
Purpose of assessment task 1
The focus of this unit is on developing an understanding of the role of the nurse in recognizing and responding to factors which impact on a child’s growth, development and wellbeing. Immunization represents an important intervention for minimizing risk and promoting health in infants, children and adolescents.
In this assessment task you will explore the case of a parent who is reluctant to immunize her child, and will explore the current evidence regarding immunization safety. You will also develop strategies for communicating with parents around sensitive and values-laden topics.
Scenario:You are undertaking a community health clinical placement in a maternal-child health (MCH) clinic. You are observing a routine health check for Beth, a 12 month old infant, who is accompanied but her mother Ashley. The MCH nurse notes that although Beth has had her routine immunizations according to the Immunization Schedule, she is also eligible for a seasonal influenza vaccine. When the nurse offers to provide the influenza vaccination free of charge, Ashley declines. Ashley states: “I had the Flu shot when I was pregnant and it gave me the flu, so I don’t want Beth to have it.”
Assignment question:
Discuss the current evidence that the MCH nurse should provide to Ashley, relating to the risks and benefits of the seasonal flu immunization in infants, and the risks associated with refusing this immunization. Identify and describe two (2) strategies the nurse could use to promote effective family-centered communication with parents who have concerns about immunization. Unit learning outcomes and Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes
This assessment task provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate the following Unit Learning outcomes and Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes;
ULO1: differentiate between normal and abnormal patterns of growth and development during the child and adolescent stages of life, and critique the factors which may impact on normal growth and development patterns;
ULO2: review the physical, psychological, and sociological influences that may increase health risks to children and adolescents from diverse backgrounds;
ULO3: using an evidence-based approach, assess symptoms, functional status, and risk in children and adolescents;
ULO4: select and evaluate person-centered approaches to maintain or improve the functional capacity of the child or adolescent; and
ULO5: justify and evaluate the effectiveness of risk management strategies implemented to reduce the influence of the identified risk factors.
