Compose a rhetorical analysis/strong response essay that comments on the effectiveness of a published article entitled “Commentary: Jill Scott Takes on Interracial Dating (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.”. Think of your audience as the academic community at large. Your thesis should argue whether or not the piece succeeds overall as an argument. Be sure to refer to the “Criteria for Effective Summary” on p.366 and the “Question-Asking Strategies” on pages 369-372, as well as the Rhetorical Analysis Questions handout. Comment on the author’s effectiveness with regard to the following: reaching a target audience; incorporating appropriate, varied, and credible evidence/sources within the argument; appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos; appropriate angle of vision; title/thesis/main idea; style, vocabulary, and word choice; organization / transitions; etc.
In addition to these evaluative comments, you may also wish to include your personal response (as noted on p.372):
- Where do you agree/disagree with the author?
- What personal values or beliefs does this text reinforce or challenge?
- What questions, dilemmas, or problems does this text raise for you?
- Can you add any examples or counterexamples from your own experience to illustrate your views?
Finally, conclude with a paragraph or two referring the reader to an article you find online (include the link within the actual paper) that also tackles the topic of race or ethnicity (could be on interracial dating, or racism in sports, or whether English should be an official language, etc.) Explain briefly one or two ways in which the article you found succeeds where Jill Scott’s article falters.
Target: 4-6 pages; that is, 1,000-1,500 words.
Note: a superior paper will include specific examples from the text (such as direct quotations) in order to support your thesis.
