Reflect:The U.S. Constitution is the cornerstone of our federal government. The Constitution establishes a basic operational framework that enables the three branches of government—executive, legislative, and judicial—to interact and function as a unit. Embedded in this operational framework are two key principles: separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. Think about how these branches interact and the importance of these checks and balances and the separation of powers.

1.The national government is divided into three completely different branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial branch. Checks and balance is created to limit power in a way within each branch. They have the power to check, or limit, the other two branches and that leads to a balance between the three separate branches. In my opinion it’s a safeguard to maintaining equality in the government. Separation of powers is the separation of power to prevent any of the three branches to overpower one another. I think this is major key because it ensures that the three different branches can’t control each other; it leaves a lot of room for accountability, and also makes sure that no individual or group in the government is powerful.

One example of checks and balances is Trumps “Travel Ban”. He wants to reshape the immigration policy. This ban will suspend immigrant’s visas from the 7 countries into America. Out of all the people it affects I’m going to shed light on college students, only because this travel bans affects family members and a few friends of mine. Some students during the time Trump first signed the executive order; feared they would have to pick family over their careers or careers over families. This leads people to be without their family.

One example of balance and power is same sex marriages. 37 states have same sex marriages, that are legalized, but California protects it here.

In all the Constitution protects everyone who lives in this county. The first amendment allows everyone freedom of speech, religion, and the right to petition. For example, the Corey Jones shooting that involved a cop who was not in uniform shot and killed Jones as he was stranded waiting for a tow truck. The family and friends petitioned.  Prescott

  1. 2. The system of checks and balances is an important part of the Constitution. With checks and balances, each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. Each branch “checks” the power of the other branches to make sure that the power is balanced between the two. Separation of power refers to the division of government responsibilities into distinct branches to limit any one branch from exercising the core functions of another,

The recent blocking of Trump’s executive order banning citizens from several countries by federal judges is one example of real-world check and balances. Its impact was that it violated the rights of Muslims to Due Process and Equal Protection guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

The recent government shutdown os one example of separation of power. Congress votes on the federal budget, the President has to sign it, which means he approves it. Before formally holding votes on both House of Representatives and the Senate, the President tells them he will not sign a budget without funding for a wall and Congress does not want to provide funding.

One recent real-world example of how the constitution directly protects individual and group rights is the First Amendment Individual Rights which gives you the right of freedom of speech and freedom of religion. For example, you can choose not to practice any religion at all, Catholic, Muslim, or Jewish. Another example is you can speak out against or for anything you want, whether you are criticizing the president of our country or publicly supporting a defendant accused of a heinous crime in a criminal case, COBB
