One of the topics in Chapter 4 is Planned Unit Developments (PUD), which are called Planned Developments (PD) in Chicago. Two such PDs are being negotiated now and have been reported in local newspapers. Both are large, roughly 60 acres each. One is on the near north side, Lincoln Yards, and the other is on the near south side, The 78. You can find many articles describing both properties online and there are some links for you below–if you have any trouble with the links, please do your own outside research.

Assignment
1. For both sites, please provide a summary of the development–where is the project, who is the developer, what type of buildings and infrastructure will be constructed. Are they planning for high rise, mid rise, or low rise? Or a combination? What property types are planned–residential, hotel, office, industrial, etc. Will there be new roads? What about transit–will there be new El or Metra stations? Will there be parks or green space? What has been the reception by the public so far? Are there any groups who have rallied support for or against either site?
2. Put your city planner hat on and provide a commentary of both developments. Has each developer provided enough park space, transit, amenities? Both have been somewhat controversial–one with respect to a sports stadium and one regarding the location of an El station. Do you think the building heights fit in with the nearby neighborhoods?
3. What do you think of each from a resident’s perspective? Would you feel differently if you currently live very close by already. Would you consider either of these to benefit you, your lifestyle, and your home’s value? What about if you were thinking about moving into one of these new neighborhoods? What issues would you like to see addressed before these are approved? Does the development “feel” like the other established neighborhoods nearby such Lincoln Park or Hyde Park?
You can probably accomplish this in a comparison table and 3-4 carefully written paragraphs. You should not post your first draft. The best discussion posts are written and edited before posting.
Note: Your initial post is due on Monday night at 6pm. Posts from other students in your group are hidden until you make your initial post. You have until Tuesday night at 6pm to post your responses to your group. You must post at least two responses, but feel free to respond often–that will make your discussion group more lively and more relevant to the materials we are covering in the book!
You must start a thread before you can read and reply to other threads
