  1. Consider the  two articles your colleague chose and research the topic with the intent to find peer-reviewed articles that were published within the last 10 years demonstrating the opposite viewpoint. If you locate opposing research findings, explain whether or not the evidence is convincing enough to make you question your peer’s stance. Be sure to cite examples in your explanation. If you do not locate any opposing research, explain why you think this type of research is not available. Did your classmate’s persuasive explanation of his or her stance cause you to change your opinion on this topic or consider other options?

  2. It is in my personal and professional opinion that children who experience attachment parenting grown up with more confidence about themselves and more empathy towards others. In the past, this style of parenting was said to make children more weak or unable to be social once they reached school age but as studies have progressed, it actually directly positive impacts how they feel support later in life as they begin to physically detach. Secure attachment can be healthy because it helps children to gain trust. “In adulthood, securely attached individuals are confident in their self-worth and the reliability of others, tend to adjust to stressful situations, and have more favorable health outcomes” (Branjerdporn, Strong & Green 2019). These children form a sense of attachment to their caregivers but are able to cope when they leave because they have confidence that they will return which translates to overall trustworthiness. This impacts short-term and log-term cognitive development because of the sense of confidence created is mental.

In a psychosocial sense, children with secure attachment used as a parenting method overall develop better social connections in school on into adulthood. They learn from positive physical and emotional interactions that it is ok to open up. “. Individuals with a secure attachment have higher levels of confidence and satisfaction and lower levels of contradictions in interpersonal relationships, while those with an ambivalent attachment are characterized as having imbalanced emotions and more contradictions” (Ebrahami 2017). Children who experience this style of parenting tend to have a more positive outlook on the potential of their social relationships due to positive childhood interactions. This makes it easier for them to blend into society as mentally sound social beings.

Overall, I believe that one of parent’s greatest desires is for our children to feel confidence, high self-esteem and a sense of worthiness. A strong foundation with all of these things reduces the chances that they will do negative things to seek validation from others. “Psychologist John Bowlby, the author of attachment theory on which AP is based, argued that children’s experiences with caregivers during their early years result in powerful and long-lasting influences on children’s sense that they are deserving of care” (Moore &Abetz 2016). Children become adults who feel deserving of care with higher patterns and behaviors of self-esteem.

  1. Daycare developed in the late 19thand 20thcenturies as a result of the industrial revolution. Widows and working women were the beneficiaries of this care (since World War II left many to take on the role of provider or head of household). Given a couple of facts on daycare’s beginning, we see how important such care is for working parents. My professional position is for daycare after the child is walking and talking; approximately beginning daycare when they have comprehended the parental guidance given. Since parents have the ultimate instruction, praise and discipline to the child; I believe it is important for the child to stay at home until they are aware of parental expectation on behavior, etc. A child’s development comes from their home environment first, then external factors. Children are easily influence and tend to follow exactly what they see. This is why my position is for children to receive outside care after their parents have established parental guidance and norms for the child.

As for the child’s development, Marano (2010) states “The type and quality of care can influence many aspects of development—including memory, language development, school readiness, math and reading achievement, the nature of relationships with parents and teachers, social skills, work habits, and behavioral adjustment—at least through grade school”. Daycare affects the child in areas such as their memory, cognitive development, social skills, social-emotional functions, and other important areas of a child’s development. Major areas are altered positively and possibly negatively; depending the quality of care. Lerner (2013) mentioned co-regulated social interactions (such as daycare) contributing to infants intersubjectivity or their senses of relations to  others (parents, caregivers, other infants and themselves). Such a strong role daycare actually takes on as it’s establishing norms for your children. Majority of the child’s day awake is spent outside of the home, under the interactions, care and direction of others; when in daycare.

Behaviors seen throughout the day by other children and even caregivers are reflected in the development of the child. “Recently, a new wave of results was released and made news because they confirmed and bolstered the validity of an earlier finding that daycare is associated with some negative effects on child behavior” (Marano, 2010). The results showed behaviors such as fighting, arguing and being disobedient in middle school years. A positive result in their cognitive  development showed children whom have received quality care achieve more academically in elementary school. Additionally, quality daycare and introduction to adult language aided their language development; having better vocabulary than other around the fifth grade.

With this information, there is an importance for children to enter daycare before elementary school. Many of the needed skills takes place in co-regulated social interactions with adults and other children. Major areas of development gain positive progression with quality daycare.  Although some studies and popular opinions calls for the mother to stay at home with child throughout their childhood; socially, children should be exposed to other children and adults to gain a better sense of themselves and parental differentiation. Personally, I have kept my child at home with the goal to enter her into daycare when walking and talking. In the next month or so, she will begin daycare. She has a sense of what her Dad and I expect from her (although she’s still learning), we believe she has much awareness and it’s time for her to interact with other children.
