1: Proposal for First Formal Paper Please address the following questions in a one page proposal: (Due on Wednesday)
● Which two class texts do you plan to write about? Why did you choose these two texts?
● Identify some important beliefs, values, or expectations (BVEs) which seem to overlap and/or conflict in these texts. Give this some focused and sustained thought. Use the questions on the Un-Packing Ideology sheet (posted on the Worksheet page on Blackboard) to get you thinking about and identifying specific BVE’s. Pick a few of these questions and ask the same ones of both texts. This will keep you focused on specific BVEs which either overlap or conflict (or both).
● Do you feel more ideologically aligned with one of the texts? Does one stand out to you as expressing an ideology closer to your own? Explain. Try to be as specific as possible. The purpose of this exercise is to catalyze critical thinking and instigate creative brainstorming. Give this Proposal about an hour of time. Don’t rush it, but also don’t get too bogged down in it.

Drogy/English 102 Major Paper 1 First Draft Minimum Length: 4 pages Due: Sunday Oct 28th (Uploaded by midnight) For the first draft of your First Formal Paper, you will be summarizing, comparing/contrasting, and building off of the ideologies expressed in two of the following class texts:
● O’Sullivan’s “The Great Nation of Futurity ● Muir’s “Man’s Place in the Universe” ● Thoreau’s “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience” ● Stanton’s “The Solitude of Self” ● King’s “Facing the Challenges of the New Age”
You should pick two texts that resonate with each other: texts that both overlap and/or contrast each other in meaningful and complex and interesting ways. You will be connecting the texts in terms of the deep and nuanced ideological ideas (the beliefs/values/expectations) expressed in both, so the trick is to discuss two texts whose points of comparison/contrast will be fruitful to think about in the context of the present-day world that you live in. Directions: 1) Summary
The first objective it to provide a deep summary of each text’s ideology. Remember: an ideology is a system of connected beliefs, values, and expectations. You’re summarizing this system of ideas, not the entire narrative of the text. Each summary will probably be around one page in length (perhaps a little more or a little less, depending on the text). It should identify what you understand to be the most significant beliefs, values, and expectations expressed in each text. Each summary should incorporate key words/phrases as well as concise quotes from the text. Remember, even single key words (such as “machine” or “solitude”) require quotation marks in order to indicate that these words have specific meanings when used by their respective authors. We will be doing a unit on quotation before the first draft is due. Our objective will be to use quotation strategically and purposefully, so that quotes don’t control the discussion but, rather, help you advance your own summary and analysis. Use the Un-Packing Ideology chart (posted on the Worksheets page of Blackboard) to help you identify specific BVEs (beliefs, values, and expectations) from each text. Remember, your summary should not only identify these various ideas; it should also explain how they connect together.
The second objective is to explore and clarify meaningful points of comparison/contrast in the two texts. In your summary you will have identified and linked together BVEs (beliefs, values, and expectation); the compare/contrast section is an opportunity to continue to explore specific BVEs in greater depth by analyzing how they are similar or different to those in the other class text. It’s up to you to decide which BVEs from the two texts would be interesting and meaningful to compare and/or contrast. The challenge in this section is not only to point out the obvious similarities/differences in the two texts’ ideologies, but—even more importantly—to push beneath the surface in order to explore the nuances of each text’s ideology.
Of the BVEs highlighted in the compare/contrast section, which ones seem most relevant and important today? Which BVEs from both texts do you either agree or disagree with, and why? The third objective is to extract from your discussion of the two ideologies specific ideas that are significant and relevant to the world you know. You are extending the discussion into new territory by reflecting on how specific BVEs previously discussed connect to your own beliefs, your own values, and your own expectations. As you explore your own BVEs in relation to those discussed in the texts, try to articulate, based on the ideas being discussed, how you view progress. Be as specific as possible by honing in on a specific issue or set of issues. This issue/set of issues should enable you to think concretely about your own BVEs.
Note 1: You will be conducting research for the Final Draft of this paper. This research will enable you to learn more about the class texts (and their authors) and/or to gain expertise on the issue (or set of issues) explored. However, research is not required for this first draft. There’s enough work to do in simply completing the three objectives outlined above. It is fine if you want to do some preliminary research, but, again, it’s not required. Note 2: In-text citation and a works cited are required for this first draft. We will briefly discuss these things, but you are expected to be using the links provided on the MLA Citation page of Blackboard. You will receive a grade of 1-5 on this first draft. If you receive less than a four, you will be at a disadvantage for your final draft, as you will be behind in the compositional process. So, please aim for a 4 or 5! Here is a quick explanation of the grading system: 4-5: Draft attends closely to all three objectives. It is thoughtful, focused, and detailed. Quotation is used effectively throughout the draft. There are minimal grammar and/or spelling errors. A strong, focused effort. 3-4: Draft does not fulfill all objectives of the assignment. Some sections of the draft lack detail and/or are incomplete. There may be distracting grammar and/or spelling issues. Quotation may need considerable work. Less than 3: Draft is in an underdeveloped stage and is lacking in specificity and detail. The objectives of the draft have not yet been met. Grammar and/or spelling and/or organization may need serious attention.
