Policy Proposal from Last Week’s Discussion

In this discussion, I intend to establish a policy proposal that will have a significant impact on Iris’ situation by considering certain trade-offs as key measures in developing the proposal. From this situation facing Iris, it is evident that the type of life led by persons prior to reaching their old ages is perhaps the most significant impact on independence during old age. Perhaps, old age remains the most difficult life stage for which a person has to plan. Just as evident from the case by Iris, people tend to be uncertain regarding their key life areas upon growing old, in comparison to any other stage in life. Elderly persons who are put under long-term-care (LTC) will at one point get bored with life out of the ordinary and eventually end up missing what they had been used to (Hennessy, 1996).

What Iris currently seeks is to have her freedom and independence fully restored so that she can go back to her golden days of traveling and driving.  Globally, there is an escalated dire need for LTC. This increased need is highly associated with the developed nations. As such, identifying LTC policies remain among the key challenges facing the current society (Plummer et al., 2014. The best policy proposal for Iris in light of her current situation is the need to have her trade-off her complete independence for home-setting care instead of a long-term care facility. This proposal will ensure that Iris enjoys her peace of mind regardless of not driving to the market or grocery stores. From a professional point of view, experts from the local Older Adults Services Agency will be forced to trade-off their preference to choose to visit care centers rather than private homes. This policy proposal will enable the elderly persons to make independent but regulated decisions pertaining to important aspects of their lives.   Besides that, this proposal will be able to embrace the contributions of elderly persons in society besides facilitating flexibility (Plummer et al., 2014).

I like your proposal to the case of Iris. It is part of the social worker policy to assist clients to feel empowered. According to Health Affairs, seniors have a high desire to feel independence and have limited assists if possible (Fulmer, 2015). With research for every different case, it is great for a social worker to advocate the best set of living arrangements for the senior to feel independent. Doing these actions will show the client respect and feel they are in control of their lives.
