Lib 316 week 5 dq 1
Ashford 6: – Week 5 – Discussion
Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.
Discussion
By Day 1 of the week, your instructor will post a discussion question. Respond to your instructor’s question and to your classmates’ responses. The goal of this discussion forum is to have a single conversation about the topic, not a series of 30 separate conversations. This means that every post should be in response to another post. Only start a new thread if you want to address a whole different theme within the topic, and only post after first carefully reading what others have written. Do not repeat what your classmates have already said, and do not ignore them if they ask you questions. Try to keep the conversation moving forward.
Attend discussion on at least four separate days, and post a total of 800 words. There is no required word count for individual posts as long as all your posts together total 800 words. Nor is there a minimum number of posts, but you must post on at least four separate days by Day 7.
Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this Discussion Thread.

Week 5 Discussion
Reading: Things Fall Apart, Parts 2-3 (Chapters 14-25, p. 130-209)
Discussion: In “An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness,” Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe critiques Conrad’s representation of Africa and European imperialism. Discuss Achebe’s own work in light of this essay. What exactly does Achebe think is wrong with Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness? Additionally, how is Things Fall Apart a critique of Conrad’s interpretation of British colonization of Africa? Cite specific passages from Achebe’s novel and essay to support your interpretation. Once you have a clear understanding of the texts, move on to evaluation and application. For example, you may wish to discuss whether or not Achebe is right that Conrad is a racist or how the concept of cultural memory might help us understand Achebe’s view of Conrad.
Discussion for Week 5. Thread your initial post of 350-400 words due Thursday, day 3, to my discussion question, and at least three responses that will comprise another 400 words to total 800 words. That means, each response to a peer needs to be a minimum of a paragraph to meet this requirement. You must post on four different days, which is a post a day. In your initial post (threaded to my post), use textual evidence with proper citations whether from the novel or from the articles under your Week 5 materials.
