Language Interview Assignment | Language
For this assignment, you will conduct an interview with someone you know who is bilingual (or multilingual) or do a self-study. While we will go over how to develop an interview protocol in class, your interview should address the following general questions:
How has your dual or multilingual language use changed and developed since birth? (How did you learn your first language? Your second language? Other languages?)
How have/do different contexts affect your use of language use? You can adapt Baker’s (2011) Language Background Scales (see Canvas) to help you gather information about your interviewee’s language use. You may find it useful to ask for examples when gathering information from the language background scales.
How have your educational experiences shaped your language use and development? Refer to Garcia Ch. 6 to consider your interviewee’s experiences in different program types or with different educational frameworks or ideologies.
What benefits and/or challenges have you experienced related to your dual or multilingual language use?
Refer to Garcia Ch. 5 to consider the cognitive, social, and economic advantages and the factors that might minimize or maximize these benefits.
Your final assignment should consist of the following components:
1.Introduction (0.5-1 page): Who did you interview? What are their languages? How/Why did you select this interviewee? When and where did you interview them? What questions did you ask, and why?
2.Analysis (3-4 pages): What did you learn from the interview? What surprised you? How does what you learned relate to at least three of the readings or other materials assigned for the course? How does what you learned compare to what you learned from your Language Observation?
Be sure to address: 1.How the interviewee’s language use changed over time and across contexts (e.g., home and school), including how and why these changes occurred;
2.How the interviewee’s educational experiences shaped their language use and development
3.How being (or not being) in a bilingual education program influenced the interviewee’s educational experiences and future trajectory; and
4.Benefits and challenges experienced by the interviewee in school and beyond. 3.Format: 1.12-point font, 1” margins, double-spaced 2.APA or MLA style citations in-text 3.Reference list in APA or MLA style
