Some of the search listings will direct you to paid materials or material behind paywalls. You are under no obligation to pay for research and there is much that is freely available. For those of you who have membership to a university, college, workplace or community/public library, your library may subscribe to additional electronic resources. http://scholar.google.co.uk/ http://explore.tandfonline.com/page/pgas/terrorism-collection http://www.jstor.org/ (free access to three articles from its collection every two weeks) https://www.academia.edu/ http://education.iseek.com/iseek/home.page Using Search Engines Effectively For those of you who do not have much or any experience with carrying out research online, the following guide from the University of Bristol collects a number of resources on how to use search engines effectively: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/library/support/findinginfo/search- engines/ Assessing Source Reliability There is a tremendous volume of information on terrorism and terrorism-related issues available online but not all of it is from reputable sources. As a result we encourage students to try to stick to the following types of websites: ? ? ? Academic (universities, colleges, research centres, blogs operated by academics) Organisational (international organisations, non-governmental organisations (e.g. Human Rights Watch, ICRC, etc.), companies (e.g. Heathrow Airport, Semantic, etc.)) Reputable news organisations (e.g. The Guardian, NYT, The Economist, Foreign Affairs, Al Jazeera, etc.) We ask students stay away from generalist sites such as Wikipedia, About.com and similar as this information is often unverified and can be incorrect. If you have questions about the legitimacy of a particular source or sources, please post a link on the forums or send an email to the module tutor who will be able to advise. Warning DO NOT access terrorist sites directly. Accessing such sites is illegal in many countries. They also often contain viruses or other malicious code that will corrupt your computer system. Ensure that all the topics in your list are covered. If you feel you still have some information gaps in the research material you have collected, go back to the search engine on the Internet and get that additional information.
