RESPONSE PAPER INSTRUCTIONS
From essays in Helen Armstrong’s Graphic Design Theory: Readings from the Field (See Schedule of Lectures on Syllabus & Titanium for due dates of each paper; copy of book on Titanium) I. PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT: I chose these essays because they are short essays by graphic designers, many of whose works we are studying in class. The essays are meant to work with the chapter and era of graphic design that we are currently studying. They also present issues in graphic design that I hope will engage your critical thinking in a field that many of you are pursuing as a current or future career. II. FORMAT: For each of the 5 papers, pick one of the assigned essays and write a one-page response that must be: a. handed in at the start of class (see syllabus for due dates) b. typed, with your name @ upper left corner c. limited to one page, double spaced, 10 or 12-point font, 1” margins d. include essay author’s name and essay title as either your title or in 1st paragraph
e. for Point #2 below, include which book (Armstrong or Eskilson) with page # of image AND title of work f. use paragraphs (one per questions, if that works for you), but not one big paragraph-page g. PROOFREAD, please!
III. GRADING: The grading will be check plus (15-13 points), check (12-10 points) and check minus (9 points & below). This is a great way to improve your grade in this 25% of your class grade. My Graduate Assistant, Melinda Curtis, grades them and posts your score on Titanium. I oversee this process, so if you have any problems with the grading on these one-page papers, feel free to speak to me or email Mel (email at top of syllabus). IV. CONTENT: TWO THINGS THAT MUST BE COVERED IN EVERY RESPONSE PAPER (I recommend you format this with one paragraph per point and state clearly for Point #1, for example: “I have identified _____ as a main point of this essay because________.”). 1. Identify a main point of the reading and state WHY you think it’s important. 2. Find a specific image of this designer’s work in either Armstrong or Eskilson and relate this image to what you think is being discussed in their essay. Explain WHY and HOW you think this example of their design work relates to their essay. (For example, how does Marinetti’s Words in Freedom layout relate to his “Manifesto of Futurism” statement? Or how does Josef Muller-Brockmann’s VOLG poster relate to his “Grid and Design Philosophy” essay?)
