HUM 26-103: Western Civ II
Survival in Auschwitz Writing Prompt

Primo Levi’s memoir, Survival in Auschwitz, paints a vivid and horrifying picture of the life of a
prisoner in Auschwitz during the Second World War. Beyond the descriptions of everyday
experiences and the organization of Auschwitz, an important theme of the story is survival.
Having now read the book, what do you believe separated those that survived Auschwitz and
those that did not? Your response must consider the three following questions: 1) What were the
threats to survival in the camps? 2) What factors were the most important in facilitating Levi’s
(and some of his fellow prisoners) survival of Auschwitz? 3) Does Levi believe that survivors
have any particular responsibilities or lessons to teach?
You must support your argument for each of the three questions with direct evidence from
Survival in Auschwitz. Your response to the first two questions must include at least two
different examples from the text in each answer (for a minimum total of 4). In answering the
third question, you should make sure to identify Levi’s position, but feel free to offer your own if
it differs.
Other Paper Requirements:
 Papers must be 3-4 double-spaced pages in length
 Papers must be written in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1 inch margins
 Papers may only cite Levi, lecture, and the textbook. Citations for readings must appear as
footnotes and follow the Chicago Manual of Style requirements. See
(https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-1.html). If you
are using an electronic copy of the book, you also need to cite the relevant electronic page
number.
o To insert a footnote in Microsoft Word click on the “References” tab and then click
“Insert Footnote”. You will automatically be moved to the bottom margin of the
page.
o The general format for a first footnote is:
 Author’s name (First and Last), Name of Book in Italics, trans. (Name of
Translator) (Publication City: Publishing Company, Year Published), Page #.
 Example: Primo Levi, Survival in Auschwitz: The Nazi Assault on Humanity,
trans. Stuart Wolf (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1958), 20.
o Any subsequent citation after the first should be shortened:
 Author’s Last Name, Shortened Book Title, Page #.
 Example: Levi, Survival in Auschwitz, 34.
o If you wish to cite the textbook:
 Example: Joshua Cole and Carol Symes, Western Civilizations: Their History
and Their Culture, Brief 4
th ed. (New York: W.W. Norton & Company,
2017), 307.
o Any subsequent citation after the first can be shortened:
 Author’s Last Name, Shortened Book Title, Page #.
 Example: Cole and Symes, Western Civilizations, 309.
o If you wish to cite information from lecture you must still utilize a footnote and use
the following example as a model: Scofield, 9/14/2018.
o The use of any outside source is prohibited.
 You will be expected to adhere to the instructions on “How to Write a Paper”.
 Your paper must have an introduction, body, and conclusion
o Make sure that every paragraph that you write and every point you make is directed at
proving/supporting your thesis
o Use direct quotations and paraphrasing to provide evidence for the points you are
making, but make sure that you include your own analysis. In other words, do not
forget to tell me WHY this evidence supports your thesis. Do not assume that that
particular piece of evidence speaks for itself.
 Use past tense in your papers
 Do not use contractions (can’t, won’t, don’t, etc.)
 Do not use personal pronouns (I, we, you, one, us, etc.)
 Avoid generalizations – “throughout history” or “from the beginning of time”
 Avoid rhetorical questions “How would you feel?”, etc.
 Some additional points that your paper will be evaluated on include:
o The clarity of your thesis statement and the argument/organization of the essay.
o How well you support your thesis with information from class sources.
o The clear presentation of your own original thoughts and insights.
o How well your essay answers both parts of the question.
o The essay needs to be proofread and free of grammatical errors and awkward
sentence constructions.
o Following the required citation style.

The writer did an incredible job on the ppt presentation this week. I am disappointed with support for the lack of communication between me and the writer which caused the paper to be late. Overall, the ppt presentation was done and the writer did a phenomenal job.
