Survival in Auschwitz Writing Prompt
Primo Levi’s memoir, Survival in Auschwitz, paints a vivid and horrifying picture of the life of a
prisoner in Auschwitz during the Second World War. Beyond the descriptions of everyday
experiences and the organization of Auschwitz, an important theme of the story is survival.
Having now read the book, what do you believe separated those that survived Auschwitz and
those that did not? Your response must consider the three following questions: 1) What were the
threats to survival in the camps? 2) What factors were the most important in facilitating Levi’s
(and some of his fellow prisoners) survival of Auschwitz? 3) Does Levi believe that survivors
have any particular responsibilities or lessons to teach?
You must support your argument for each of the three questions with direct evidence from
Survival in Auschwitz. Your response to the first two questions must include at least two
different examples from the text in each answer (for a minimum total of 4). In answering the
third question, you should make sure to identify Levi’s position, but feel free to offer your own if
it differs.
Other Paper Requirements:
Papers must be 3-4 double-spaced pages in length
Papers must be written in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1 inch margins

You will be expected to adhere to the instructions on “How to Write a Paper”.
Your paper must have an introduction, body, and conclusion
o Make sure that every paragraph that you write and every point you make is directed at
proving/supporting your thesis
o Use direct quotations and paraphrasing to provide evidence for the points you are
making, but make sure that you include your own analysis. In other words, do not
forget to tell me WHY this evidence supports your thesis. Do not assume that that
particular piece of evidence speaks for itself.
Use past tense in your papers
Do not use contractions (can’t, won’t, don’t, etc.)
Do not use personal pronouns (I, we, you, one, us, etc.)
Avoid generalizations – “throughout history” or “from the beginning of time”
Avoid rhetorical questions “How would you feel?”, etc.
Some additional points that your paper will be evaluated on include:
o The clarity of your thesis statement and the argument/organization of the essay.
o How well you support your thesis with information from class sources.
o The clear presentation of your own original thoughts and insights.
o How well your essay answers both parts of the question.
