Peer Review Guidelines, Major Assignment #2: Covering an Essay

Not every question below need be answered to write a helpful peer review.  Choose those questions that seem most relevant to the paper you’re peer reviewing, and focus most intently on them.  Remember that your peer review should be at least one page single-spaced. Also, you should format your peer review as a letter written to the writer of the paper. An alternative to this format would be to provide useful comments in the margins, followed by an end note that summarizes your suggestions to show trends and patterns in your comments. If you got that route, be sure to have at least 9 comments that go beyond checking grammar and style, and write your end note to be at least 200 words. Either way, tonally, keep that in mind as you write, your job is to thoughtfully and specifically help and guide, not to demoralize or vaguely praise.

Regarding the cover—

  • (Re)read the original essay. Note what’s most interesting about it. Note its argument. Now, give your take on whether the cover essay feels like it’s true to the original. Where in the cover do you see that this is being accomplished best? Where in the essay do you have questions about whether that is happening? Be specific.

  • Identify rhetorical devices and strategies used that feel similar to what’s in the original. What do they accomplish? What reaction do you have to them? How does all this relate to what you’ve said about #1 above?

  • Identify rhetorical devices and strategies used that feel different from the original. What do they accomplish? What reaction do you have to them? How does all this relate to what you’ve said about #1 above?

  • What’s the point of the new writing? How does it feel in relation to the original essay? Refer to places in the paper where the new argument is most keenly felt. If possible, connect this to your discussions of rhetorical devices and strategies.

  • Beyond the obvious. Does the writer say something that would be obvious even without much writing on this topic? Or, does the writing demonstrate that the writer has done some work to arrive at conclusions that go beyond the obvious? Point to examples.

  • Does the writer seem aware of how this essay functions as a cover? In other words, do you get the feeling that this writer understood what there was to cover? Do you get the feeling that this writer understood how the choices they made for what to imitate and what to change would affect the way readers viewed their writing?

NOTE: Additional questions will be forthcoming regarding the “explanation” part of the essay.
