Week 4 – Discussion 1

Technology is becoming more and more the norm across the United States regardless of cultural background or socio-economic status. Because of this trend, the International Society for Technology In Education (ISTE) has developed a set of standards geared towards “evaluating the skills and knowledge students need to learn effectively and live productively in an increasingly global and digital world” (ISTE, 2013).

Students who do not have home computers can have free Internet access from libraries, after school programs, and community centers.  ELLs are likely to be proficient in technology even if they are not yet proficient in English; therefore, integration as part of an informal assessment or lesson plan not only provide meaningful evaluation and instruction but also utilize best teaching practices by connecting background knowledge with new concepts.

Using the Colorin Colorado website, Using Technology in ELL Instruction, as a starting point, evaluate technology that can be used to enhance ELL instruction.  Either choose from one of the links provided or choose one on your own to evaluate.  In your evaluation (which includes the specific link) please include:

  1. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE standards) is most applicable
  2. The target age group and demographics of your school district
  3. The technology you have chosen to enhance ELL instruction specific to meeting the students at their level of ‘readiness’ and guide future instruction
  4. How your choice of technology stands out among all the other options
  5. How you will incorporate it into your lesson plan
  6. Explanation for how this same technology choice can be extended to home practice and aligns with the NETS-S standards (or the local public library if a student does not have a home computer).

Guided Response:  Respond to at least two peers by first reviewing the link posted and the answers to the discussion board prompt. Then using what you’ve learned from the review and justification, determine if this is something you too might use, and explain why or why not.  Support your answer with at least one additional source (cited in APA format).  In addition, do you believe that the ‘at home’ suggestion is a realistic expectation keeping in mind the targeted population?

Week 4 – Discussion 2

Assessment Driven Instruction

Although there are many options for integrating technology in the classroom, teachers have to be careful that this is used as a teaching tool and not a teaching replacement.  One way to use this tool as an addendum to classroom instruction is as an assessment tool that provides you and the student immediate proficiency feedback.

Conduct a search of free online games for learning English by using terms such as “ELL free games,” “learn English games,” or “ESL games” and then take some time to play some of the games you’ve found.  Compare and contrast at least two different games that assess the same skill for the same proficiency level.  What do both have in common?  Using at least one peer reviewed article found on the Ashford University library, explain how the games you’ve chosen can accurately assess student language and skill using research as a foundation. How are they different in terms of providing an accurate assessment of skill again using research to support your claim? Which is your favorite, (again keeping in mind the focus of assessing a proficiency skill) and why? Which is your least favorite and why? Please make sure to provide a citation for all three games you are evaluating.*

*See the section on “Computer Software/Downloaded Software” for APA citation guidelines at Reference List: Electronic Sources (Web Publications)

Guided Response:  Respond to at least two of your peers by first playing the three games posted and then reading the evaluation of each.  Do you agree with your peer’s final decision regarding the effectiveness of the assessment?  After your own experience with these three games, explain to your peer how the one you feel most accurately assesses a proficiency skill that can be used to drive teacher-delivered instruction. Be sure to provide additional references as needed to support your post.

Week 4 – Assignment

Writer’s Workshop Blog

As you learned in Chapter 7 of your textbook, writing workshop is a great way to encourage English Language Learners (ELLs) (and also general education students) to connect their personal experiences to enrich the writing experience while also becoming more proficient in English. This strategy has multiple steps that scaffold the writing process beginning with prewriting or mapping ideas and moving through each stage until the final stage of publication.

For this assignment, you will create a writer’s workshop lesson plan that clearly maps out each stage of the writing process, beginning with a clearly written writing prompt that serves as a guide but also allows for creativity and flexibility with special attention to individual student cultural backgrounds and experiences. The end goal of the lesson is for students to create a blog (see below).

The following components are required in your lesson plan:

  1. Introduction: Describe the lesson information including:
  • Lesson Title.
  • Grade Level.
  • One specific, measureable writing learning objective.
  • Student population: Describe the population of students in this writing class (this should be based on your school district’s demographics). This should be an inclusive class with both general education students and ELLs.

  1. Standards: Discuss the Common Core State Standard(s) (or your state’s standards), English Language Development Standard(s), and NETS-T Standards that are addressed in this lesson.

  1. Lesson: Using the listed steps in Chapter 7 (you will not be addressing all the steps, just the ones listed below), create a writer’s workshop for your students that is age, grade, and readiness appropriate with the end goal of creating a blog. Your lesson plan will include the following:
  • Prewriting-Describe the structured writing prompt you would give to students that provides guidance on the topic with enough flexibility to share personal experiences relevant to their lives.

    • Drafting – Using key vocabulary that is consistent with your objective and the standards, create an outline of what you would expect students to include in their blog (for example: personal introduction, likes and dislikes, family, hobbies, future goals, etc.)

      • Self-Correction and Revision – Explain how you will have students self-edit their work. With a rubric? Guiding questions? Check sheet?

        • Publication – Using one of the blogging website provided (Top 10 Free Online Blogging Platforms), create a blog pretending you are fictional student for who your lesson plan was intended. You can look at some examples of student blogs in the “Recommended Resources” section. Be sure to provide your blog’s link.

        1. Reflection: Reflect on the writer’s workshop lesson by addressing the following:
        • How will you have the students contribute to their blog throughout the school year?
        • How will you use the ELLs’ blogs throughout the school year to formally and informally assess their language and writing proficiency growth?
        • Finally, how will you use the blog as a way for peers to interact and collaborate during their learning process?

The lesson plan will be two to four pages in length (in addition to the title and reference pages) using APA format. Be sure to use at least two scholarly sources in addition to the text.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
