Week 1 – Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.

A significant part of understanding and teaching language is having a strong grasp of the meanings and applications of five fundamental language terms:  lexicon, morphology, pragmatics, semantics, and syntax.

You will want to know more about each of these important language terms and conduct your own research.  develop a list of print and media resources to help you with this.  For each of the five language terms, locate, correctly cite, and briefly describe at least one research based source that can assist you with learning and applying these terms in the classroom.  What makes each source useful to you?

Also locate, correctly cite, and briefly describe at least one media source (video, power point, or other media-based source) that can assist you with learning and applying these terms in the classroom.  What makes each source useful to you?

Guided Response:  Select at least two classmates’ responses for review and response.  In evaluating their brief resource descriptions, decide which print or media source would be the most useful to you in helping to learn one of the language terms.  Be sure to include your rationale for your selection.  Also, be sure to respond to any questions from your instructor.  Finally, use this research as one basis for this week’s paper.

Week 1 – Discussion 2

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.

Second Language/Foreign Language Data

Anna is a fifth-grade student at your school. She is the “family interpreter” at school functions, as her parents and younger siblings do not speak English. You notice that Anna has difficulties with some aspects of English, specifically with her use of syntax (her word order in sentence structure) and morphology (her use of prefixes/suffixes).

Using the Ashford University Library, locate two recent peer-reviewed research articles that would help you with addressing Anna’s difficulties in English. In your discussion post, provide an assessment of the best methods suggested by the authors for working with Anna’s difficulties.  Would these methods be effective?  How would you know whether or not they were effective?

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts.  Respond to at least two of your peers by providing feedback on what your classmates have mentioned as the best methods suggested for working with Anna’s difficulties.  Consider whether you agree or disagree and provide your rationale.

Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this Discussion Thread.

Week 1 – Assignment

Classroom Activity – Applying Language Terminology in the Classroom

Select one or more language terms (lexicon, morphology, pragmatics, semantics, or syntax) and develop a research-based classroom activity applying the language term(s) for a target student audience.  In addition to using at least two scholarly sources, be sure to use one multi-media resource in creating your classroom activity.  You should use the references you developed for Discussion One to assist you.

Include the following in your activity:

  1. Identify and describe the target audience, the language term(s) being addressed, and the standard(s) being addressed.
  2. Describe the activity in detail, including pre-teaching and formative assessment.

The paper should be three to four pages, not including the title and reference page, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.  Use at least two scholarly references and multi-media source in addition to the text.
