Week 3 – Discussion 3

 

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Culture   Clash – A Bowl of Beings

 A major theme in the above play, Culture Clash – A Bowl of Beings, is the joke “I am confused and full of rage.”  The skits and story in this play highlights parts of the Chicano and Latino consciousness.  Watch the entire production and then reflect on one or more of the skits. Share what parts of the play address the challenges of the Latino community.  Think about the stereotypes they used to convey their message of establishing a consciousness and voice for “La Raza” (“The race” or people of Hispanic decent.)  Why does the phrase “I am confused and full of rage” repeat in the play? Review the recommended resources if you need more contexts to understand each scene better.
 

Guided Response: There are many parts to the play that highlight different aspects of the Chicano psyche. Consider your classmates’ posts and engage them in one of the sketches listed below.

Think about Josue from the text, ELL Shadowing as a Catalyst for Change, as a Latino struggling in school.  How does he fit in the Latino/Chicano psyche and why? Share what you found most revealing about the phrase “I am confused and full of rage” in the sketch of your choice.  Explain to your peers if you think this play is relevant for understanding your future ELLs.  Reflect on Josue and this new knowledge, how might honoring his culture in the curriculum help him? Connect with at least two of your classmates.
