Week 3 – Discussion 1


Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.



Cultural   Proficiency & The Arts

 Nuri-Robins et al. (2012) explain “The dignity of individuals is not guaranteed unless the dignity of the group is also preserved” (p. 52).  Therefore, we are going to take a very brief and selective glimpse into Latino art to reveal some preliminary ideas about the culture.  

Review the following websites on Carlos Santana, Celia Cruz, and Frida Khalo, read the biographies of each artist and review their works of art (music video or painting):

Art tells us so much about the passion and values of a culture.  Considering the biographies of each artist and his or her artwork, what are the ideals of Latino culture or messages being conveyed?  How does each work of art differ, and yet how are the artists all connected as Latino artists?  In other words, does being Latino mean you have one shared perspective?  If so, what is it?  If not, explain how you would categorize, characterize, and define these perspectives.  

Guided Response: Now that you have been exposed to some Latino culture, review what your peers have written.  Did they share in your views, add a new perspective, or open your eyes in a new way?  Discuss possible activities with your classmates, via your response postings, on how this new cultural knowledge can be used in the classroom to honor Latinos and meet academic objectives?  Also, considering that “[c]ulturally proficient practice assumes the school setting includes the community and parents” (Nuri-Robins et al., 2012, p. 53), how will you and your peers reach out to families to achieve the new activity you have created?  Respond to at least two peers and help them build unique approaches to address cultural proficiency.
