Introduction

Background information

Perceived sociocultural pressure to be thin has an important impact about increasing the prevalence of eating disorders, Bulimia nervosa is a serious, potentially life-threatening eating disorder.

Thesis statement

The aim of this literature review was to investigate the occurrence prevalence and correlates of bulimia nervosa in Saudi Arabia, the etiology of this disorder is related to various associated social, psychological and biological factors.

Body

We summarized current literature review, and it showed that Bulimia nervosa is one of the risk physical problems which may lead to mental consequences. In the other hand, most of the women in Saudi Arabia were affected from this disorder more than the men. Also, Most of the women and the adolescent girls are going through difficult times when they develop the Bulimia Nervosa.

We have realized in Saudi Arabia, Bulimia Nervosa which classified as an eating disorder is one of the health problems that is affecting most of the women and controlling it has been a problem because it takes a long time, and the treatment of it can cost a lot of money. Whereas 20% of Bulimia patients die due to the illness impacts(Vitiello B, Lederhendler I.). Beside, the main causes of the emergence of this disorder that most of the women have been more negative feelings about their bodies, and they have not been participating in physical activities, and they also have taken a lot of the fast foods. After that, they have started to develop the unhealthy weight behaviors. For example, they take the diet pills and use the laxatives because they think these pills help them to reduce their body weight, and they also start fasting by skipping food and vomiting after eating, so they have been the ones who have been affected of Bulimia disorder. This is the reason why we came to realize that they develop bad shape and heavyweight which complicates their health, and they are found to be suffering from many diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Bulimia disorder was realized to be contributing to some risk factors such as genetics, age, pubertal status, and body mass index. It also leads to body image dissatisfaction. We also realized that it leads to psychological issues which may include depression and stress, and may it reaches obsessive-compulsive disorder. Moreover, we realized that eating disorder or bulimia leads to low self-esteem and low personality traits. Bulimia also leads to some sociocultural factors that include the influence of the media and social pressure. It also leads to bullying, physical and sexual abuse. These are some effects that we realized that most of the people in Saudi Arabia are going through especially the women who have been recognized to be most affected.
