Present your views in approximately 250 words in your initial discussion post.

Discussion 2

How have the NLRA rules about contact with employees failed to keep up with technology?

Present your views in approximately 250 words in your initial discussion post.

Week Two Lecture

Unions, at one point, were considered illegal and strikes were often very bloody (Seaquist, 2015; Unknown, 2014). The U.S. government often sided with management and would squash union-organizing efforts and strikes. Courts would find workers guilty of committing crimes and fine workers for strikes. Eventually, the U.S. supported labor and the labor union movement. Laws were created allowing labor to organize. This week’s lesson will focus on the rise of legal protection for labor and unionization of a workplace. Chapter 3 will provide a historical context of labor legislation. Chapter 4 will move the topic forward and discuss the application of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) to union elections to determine if workers wish to be represented by a union in their workplace. Very simply, Chapter 4 will provide the details of the ins and outs of unionization under the NLRA.

As you read the material, try to place yourself in the position of the laborer. How do they feel? What would it be like to be treated this way? Then reverse your position and place yourself in the shoes of the managers. What may influence their decisions?

Try to imagine the frustration of working in horrendous conditions and having the federal government tell you that, yes, it is okay that your employer works you long hours for little pay. How difficult would it be to keep from participating in violent protests? The government saw strikes as a form of civil unrest, rebellion, and even war. The government worked to suppress strikes and provided troops to put down labor unrest. Labor and management were at war.

If you read Andrew Carnegie’s Autobiography about the Homestead Strike, you can see the event through Carnegie’s eyes. You can gain his personal perspective. When you read the textbook (Seaquist, 2015), you see the Homestead Strike through labor’s eyes. How do they differ?

If you read the article about West Virginia’s Mine Wars, you will see the violence that occurred due to harsh and unfair treatment of workers.

The winning of labor rights has been a long and costly battle. When you read the material, remember, this is American history. This is part of who we are as a nation. How do the lessons from the past affect us today? What current events are still helping form our labor policies as a nation? As organizational managers, it will be up to you to try and keep unions out of the organization. However, you may be required to deal with unions. It is important that you can place yourself in laborers’ shoes and understand their struggle. The more emotional intelligence you apply to your job as a manager, the more you increase the chances of keeping labor happy and making your managerial life easier.
