In this discussion, you will practice responding to quotes. You can interact with a quote by imagining that you are in conversation with the author. Imagine the author is speaking the quote to you. You must decide what you say back to the author. This first requires interpretation and analysis of the quote (What does this quote mean? And why might the author state this?).Then, you will offer your response by stating whether or not you agree or disagree with the quote and why. Remember, you are trying to create a swift exchange between you and the author. Avoid the words “agree” and “disagree” and go right into your response.
We will practice this by responding to famous song lyrics.
Please respond to three of the following quotes by offering interpretation/analysis and your response:
“All you need is love.”
“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.”
“You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”
“A rock feels no pain. And an island never cries.”
“And as we wind on down the road. Our shadows taller than our soul.”
“You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometime, you find you get what you need.”
“And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning. In the words that it was forming. And the sign said, ‘The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls. And whispered in the sounds of silence.”
Note that there is no context for any of these quotes. This requires you to only focus on the words presented to you. This is all you can analyze and offer a response to.
Once you have posted your response, choose to respond to a classmate who has responded to at least one quote you haven’t. Offer your own interpretation/response for that quote. This week, you only need to respond to ONE of your peer’s responses.
