Always reinforce civil behavior and good moods and asking the person to think before they speak. All these suggestions can be used to help aid in dealing with a difficult person in the workplace. I think the most successful tactic to use when dealing with a difficult person is too help the person feel more confident. I think this works best all-around in the work place and at home. It is a positive way of dealing with people in general and when you uplift a person even if they remain difficult to deal with, they still think about what you said to them later.
