You can use tact and diplomacy, use non hostile humor, or even work out some sort of deal with the person. Always reinforce civil behavior and good moods and asking the person to think before they speak. All these suggestions can be used to help aid in dealing with a difficult person in the workplace. I think the most successful tactic to use when dealing with a difficult person is too help the person feel more confident. I think this works best all-around in the work place and at home. It is a positive way of dealing with people in general and when you uplift a person even if they remain difficult to deal with, they still think about what you said to them later. Your positive impact will still influence them later and even though you might not have helped them in the moment, you might have helped them out later that day or even week.
