Read carefully: Two OPTIONS for Discussion 3 (one or the other, not both). Respond to two of your classmates elaborating on their explanation. Original posts should be at least 300 words.  Responses to classmates should be at least 100 words.

Option One:

• Locate a research study in any of the following journals: Journal of Consumer Research, Consumer Culture Theory, or Research in Consumer Behavior.  Write a summary of the conclusions. Use the summary provided for the first reading (The Modern Woman Myth…) as an example. In addition to the summary, include observations on marketing’s influences in cultural values.

Option Two:

• Provide a further summary of details for one of the online tribes analyzed in the second reading (Control and Power in Online Consumer Tribes…).  Identify the four types of subject positions with one of the following: 1) the pastor, 2) regular sheep, 3) good sheep, and 4) black sheep. In addition to the summary, include observations on marketing’s influences in cultural values.

1. From the TED talk on the prior page,Tomasz, a Polish man interviewed by Iyengar, commented: “I don’t need twenty kinds of chewing gum. I don’t mean to say that I want no choice, but many of these choices are quite artificial.” Do you think Americans are preoccupied with artificial or superficial choices? Why or why not? And if so, do you think this preoccupation prevents them from considering more important choices, or distracts them from recognizing areas where there are critical deficits or absences of choice?
2. During her TED talk, Iyengar identifies three basic American assumptions about choice. First, that the individual is the best person to make choices about things that affect him or her; second, the more choices, the better; and third, that one must never say no to choice. Pick one of these three assumptions and describe a personal experience that supports or contradicts it.
