 Hello everyone!

My name Abigail and I am 23 years old. My husband and I are currently stationed on the island of Oahu in Hawaii – he is in the Marine Corps – but we are both originally from Minnesota. Living in Hawaii is absolutely incredible, and I feel very blessed to have been afforded this opportunity. Unfortunately, we have less than two years left on island, and we are trying to figure out what our next step is going to be, which is proving to be much more difficult than expected. We are parents to four extremely lovable animals. We have two dogs: Stitch, a 10-pound dachshund x terrier mix, and Ella, a 70-pound retriever mix, and two cats: Sylvester and Bunny. We have gotten very lucky with four very sweet and well-behaved animals. I am a manager at a Starbucks on the Marine Corps base, and spend about 40 hours a week there. When I’m not at school I really enjoy baking, cooking, drawing, and playing video games. We also like to spend a lot of time hiking and going to the beach with friends on weekends. Educationally, this is my last class before graduation, so my goal is to pass it. I have begun applying for social working jobs in the government, and I really hope to be able to land a job that actually utilizes my degree within the next couple of months.

I think one of the things that I would want to change most is the requirement of experience. This is particularly important to me right now as a young adult who is just exiting college. I spent the last four years getting a degree, and during that time the jobs I worked were not related to my field, but I had to have them to pay my bills. Now that I am trying to enter my field, many of the jobs I am applying to require a year and a half of experience minimum. But is experience really that necessary? “According to a study conducted jointly by Ohio State University, New York University and the University of Pennsylvania, an abundance of work experience can actually hurt employee performance in the long run” (Strieber, 2016). Not only that, but experience can only be made through doing. Many of the things we learn, we learn by doing. “The family life educator will encounter diverse values and family structures that create ethical challenges as well as the need for new knowledge and technical skills” (Palm, 2012). So, even if someone has experience, things are constantly changing and their experience may be outdated.

Hello, my name is JoAnn. I currently live in Clyde Texas. I moved here February 1 after spending the last five years in Okinawa Japan. My husband is station at Dyess Air Force Base here in Texas. We just brought a house and we have a set of boy girl twins who will be 8 months on the 13. This is my second time taking this class because I did not do well and not able to focuses on my school work with moving with my twins alone until my husband was able to join us and I also was working but now I am ready to do good in this class and finish school. Outside of school I work at the child development center on base, I have been working on base at their centers for the last five years, Other than working I love spending time with my twins, they are my world and spending time with my husband.

 

The one thing that I would really like to change in child development professions is the ratio for staff to children. At the centers that I have worked at for infants it 1 staff to 4 infants, the 1 year old class is 1 staff to five children. The 2 year told room is 1 staff to 7 children and the 3-5 year olds is 1 staff to 12 children. Out in town infant’s teachers can have 10 children per person and the other ages the staff can have up to 24 children. They only way to change this is to get the state to change their laws and to get the military to change their rules too.  I The reason why I think this is important because with a smaller ratio the staff would be able to meet the needs of the children better and faster than if the ratio to children to staff were higher. I have found that sometimes it is hard to meet the needs of the children in the center that I work in because there are four infants to one staff and when babies are hungry and need to be changed and more than one needs to get feed it because hard because you an only feed one child at a time.

Hello everyone,

 

    Each content area covered by CFLE encompasses the vast diversity of human development and family life. Child and Family Development specialist must cover broad aspect across the lifespan of human development and family. I feel that each content area offers a special aspect for Child and Family specialists to use in their work with families and children. The areas cover the different areas that impact family life from human development, relationships, public policy, resource management, parent education, sexuality, ethics and practices, families within society, family interactions and family life methodology. Each area encompasses how a variety of aspects effect the family and environment around it. However, I believe that one of the most important content areas  to Child and Family Development specialist is the content area of interpersonal relationships. This content area involves communication skills, love, and how a person relates to others through respect, sincerity, and responsibility (NCFR 2012). I believe that this is one of the most important content areas because interactions within the family are children’s first insights into interactions and patterns within society. Children take the communication skills that they learn through family relationships into their lives and society.

 

    The family can be thought of as a foundational unit of society. Through family children are though to be socialized and nurtured (Segrin & Flora 2011). According to Segrin & Flora (2011) children are taught about social skills, manners, norms, routines, and stories. The family also provides children with basic care and emotional support to nurture a child’s development. The communication and relationship skills that children learn through family experiences will be the skills that children take into their own education, relationships, and throughout their lives. This could also include how children make decisions, self-control, empathy, problem solving,and resolve conflict. This skills can be used in a variety of ways to benefit children and families. Communication and family interactions can also have an impact on divorce, child abuse, and domestic violence (Segrin & Flora 2011). These negative impacts can have long lasting effects that could cause stress to children, families, and even society. Focus on family relationship could help to decrease stress and trauma for families and children. Due to the possible positive and negative impacts that interpersonal relationships have on families, children, and society. The use of communication and how individuals interact with each other are useful and necessary tools that every individual will need in society and in their lives.

            There are ten Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) content areas that are important in their own right to Child and Family Development specialists. Content area I is families and individuals in societal context which is the understanding of relationships between families and societal institutions. Content area II is internal dynamics of families which means understanding how family members relate to each other and their strengths/weaknesses. Content area III is human growth and development across the life span which is the basic understanding of development across the life span. Content area IV is human sexuality which focuses on sexual development across the life span. Content area V is interpersonal relationships which explores theories related to communication and intimacy. Content area VI is family resource management which focuses on understanding the allocation of resources to meet family goals and needs. Content area VII is parenting education and guidance which explores how parents interact and teach their children. Content area VIII is family law and public policy which dives into legal issues and policies related to families. Content area VIIII is professional ethics and practices which focuses on ethical issues related to professional practices. Content area X is family life education methodology which focuses on implementing educational programs. (NCFR, 2012).

Each one of these content areas is just as important as the other. I think that the difference between the two is in the order that they should be focused on. In my opinion human growth and development across the life span is the most important to Child and Family Development specialists. Human growth and development across the life span is understanding developmental changes such as physical, cognitive, emotional, ect. (NCFR, 2012). Content under this area includes identifying and assisting families through developmental changes, recognizing influences and impacts on families, and correctly applying principles (Darling, Fleming, & Cassidy, 2009). This is such an important concept because it lays the foundation of any FLE’s program. Human growth and development is literally the basic foundation of knowledge that any CFLE needs to have in order to help a family. CFLEs believe that this content area is one of six that entry level professionals need a greater proficiency in (Darling, et.al., 2009). Specifically, human growth and development across the life span was ranked number one in a study conducted by Darling, Fleming and Cassidy (2009).

            As a Child and Family Development major I have been studying developmental changes throughout the human life span through most of my college career. This is the beginning steps any CFLE major must accomplish before receiving their degrees and moving forward into the career field making it one of the most important content areas. This basic knowledges gives professionals working with families the ability to identify developmental changes and help the family navigate these changes with minimal impact on the family life.
