Curt’s Cowboy Corner

Professor’s Name

For the smooth operation of a business, many professionals are involved. At the beginning of a business, due to its small size, it is possible for the owner to carry out all the operations by themselves. The quantity of stock is small, and the number of employees is also small making it easily manageable. However, with the growth of the business, it is advisable to employ professionals who will help in the running of the business. Continued operation of the business without professionals upon its growth leads to many problems within the organization. The different professionals that are involved include accountants and human resource personnel. Curt has refused to hire these essential professionals for the operation of his business as he believes that the employment of individuals not directly involved in the sales is a waste of money. However, this is not the best approach, and it is assured to cause many detrimental effects on the business.

The lack of professionals with the growth of a business is characterized by some symptoms which may lead to inefficiency in the business operation. First Curt could not be able to handle job interviews and handle some of the newer employees. This is due to the time constraint as a result of an increase in the activities to be carried out in the business. In the last month, he delayed in completing the payroll for two days which created numerous problems with the employees. Complaints from one of the employees on sexual comments from her boss is also another symptom of the problems underlying in the organization. Curt and his secretary are the only individuals involved in the operation of the business, and this is the cause of the above problems.

The organization has 15 stores with each store having a store manager, three full-time sales representatives, and five or six part-time employees. This adds up to 15 managers, 45 full-time employees and between 75 and 90 part-time employees. This shows a significant growth in the business from the beginning of the business with just one store. The business is projected to continue growing, and there will be almost 100 full-time employees. In addition to the managers and the part-time employees, this will be an overwhelming number for curt to manage. Therefore his philosophy of not employing anyone who is not directly involved in the sales will not be applicable. He will need to employ other administrative personnel to help in the daily operation of the business.

From the problems that the organization is facing, it is obvious that the management of the business is becoming overwhelming for Curt. There are many alternative solutions to the problems that Curt is facing. Due to his adamant nature to not employ people who are not directly involved in the direct sales of the goods, he can sell the business to another person. This will be beneficial to him in the short run as he will reap the benefits and save the business from collapse as a result of his managerial philosophy. However, this will not be beneficial in the long run since the business has a huge potential for growth and he cannot be able to tap into those benefits. Therefore, this option may not be viable for tackling the issues at hand.

Curt can also partner with other individuals who will help in the management of the business. Instead of employing human resource personnel, he can partner with someone with human resource expertise. This will provide double benefits to the organization as it will bring in the required expertise while bringing in extra finances for the expansion of the business. However, there will be reduced ownership of the business as it will be divided amongst himself and the other new partners who have ventured into the business. Reduced ownership percentage translates to a reduced share of the profits. Curt will also be limited to the decisions to make for the business as he has to consult the other partners. After weighing the advantages and disadvantages of partnership Curt can decide whether the benefits outweigh the disadvantages and if he is willing to accommodate them.

Due to the overwhelming nature of the management as a result of a large number of stores, Curt may hold on to his philosophy and cut down on the number of stores to facilitate better management. However, this is not good for the business as it will imply the collapse of the business which may lead to the loss of a significant number of loyal customers. It will help in the efficient management of the stores, and after establishing that they are not closing down, it will improve the store performance. The cut down can be determined by analyzing the different stores and determining the ones which are the least beneficial. Elimination of the least performing stores will allow for the investment of more resources to the better performing stores consequently leading to further improvements.

Curt also has the option of retiring and employ someone capable of effectively managing the business to ensure its continued growth. This will help in the infusion of professionalism to the organization hence improving the efficiency with which the organizational operations are carried out. However, the intensity and passion for the business may lack with the new manager since the business may be something they are not passionate about. Finally, he can abandon his business philosophy of not hiring people who are not directly involved in sales. This will allow him to hire other professionals such as the human resource personnel who will help in the administrative functions. The human resource personnel may either be for the individual stores or can be one to cater to all the stores. However, with the continued growth of the business, it is advisable if he cannot hire a human resource manager for all the stores, then they are grouped according to their geographical location. Different human resource personnel is then hired to manage the stores in different geographical regions. The only disadvantage presented by this option is the payment required to be made to the human resource managers.

The best option for the business is to hire human resource managers. It is a great investment for the organization as it will infuse professionalism to the organization. All the other options provide solutions which may not be beneficial in the future or on the owner Curt. However, the option for hiring human resource managers provides a lasting solution and provides room for adjustments to be made with the growth of the business. Human resource managers help in the running of the organization by managing the human labor. Although they will not be directly involved in the sales aspect of the business, they are an essential part of the organization.

Human resource managers will be helping in carrying out interviews which recruit new workforce to the organization. The close monitoring of the workers will also help in the improvement of the performance index which has been dwindling.  They are also responsible for processing the employees’ payroll. Curt has been experiencing difficulties in this department, and during the last month, the payroll had been delayed for two days. The human resource managers will ensure that the payrolls are released on time hence eliminating the problems associated with late payrolls. Sexual harassment is an issue that can have detrimental effects on the success of the organization. Although he has effectively handled the recent issue of sexual comments made by a boss to an employee, he did not have the requisite knowledge and skills to handle the situation. Human resource managers have been trained on how to solve such situations in the office space and their expertise will be essential in solving future cases.

The opinion held by Curt that employees who do not directly contribute to the success of the business are not essential is held by many business people. However, professionals are as important to the business as the sales people. This is because, despite the immense success in the sales department, poor management can easily lead to the downfall of the business. Therefore, any business person who employs professionals to take care of business operations makes a good choice for the business. Therefore, Curt hiring human resource managers is the best decision for the business. Curt has plans of growing the business to have nearly 100 full-time employees, and he has already begun to be overwhelmed with a capacity of 15 full-time employees. It is therefore inevitable to obtain outside help for the business since it is evident that he cannot be able to handle the many stores he has envisioned to grow into.

Evaluation of the benefits of the human resource managers will be necessary to determine whether they are adding the intended value to the organization. The evaluation can be carried out based on the different functions that they are carrying out. Feedback from the employees they will be managing will help, and this can be achieved anonymously either through anonymous rating or secret complaints or congratulatory boxes. The timeline for finishing tasks can also be used to determine the efficiency of their functions. An example is checking whether the payrolls are made in the time since this is an issue that is presently disturbing Curt. Good human resource management ensures the smooth running of the operation. Therefore checking on how the business is operating will determine their efficiency. The human resource managers also deal with the different issues that may arise between the employees such as sexual complaints. An evaluation of the procedures, conclusions, and solutions to the problem helps in determining their efficiency. Due to the skeptical nature of Curt, he can carry out the evaluation process at the beginning to establish the importance that human resource managers have to the organization. However, with time, it is important to get an external auditor to evaluate the operation of the managers.
