Final grades– based on cumulative points and are awarded based on a 10% scale.
Paper length– a paper should be well reasoned- for some, who have excellent writing skills; this may take very little space- for others it may be more- Hence, length is determined by when you feel an
argument has been appropriately defined and subsequently supported. Late papers are penalized 15%.
Exams will follow a “short answer format” written in Greenbooks. The best strategy for exam preparation is the time honored concept of class attendance. A reminder- write in a manner that allows me to read it- if I cannot read your answer you DO NOT get the benefit of the doubt- you will be allowed to translate your answer after the exam but avoiding this is in your best interest. All make-up exams will be administered following the completion of the third test. Please advise the instructor if an exam is missed. Unless circumstances warrant changes, all exam material comes from Starling and
related class discussions.
The book critique will examine the Gormley text we are reading this semester. This assignment will ask you to critically examine the text and ask yourself what you think of the arguments followed by commentary on what the consequences of such an argument might be. This is NOT a book review or synopsis- I repeat- this is NOT a book review or synopsis. We have all read the book- this is your opportunity to comment on the book and offer critical appraisal of the work. To the extent that you need to cite the book or summarize a point in the text please do so but in the end you are offering your own thoughts and insights based on your reading of the text.
Group Paper- Agency Review (max. group size- 3). This paper will examine the workings of a
federal, state, or local agency. In order to complete this assignment you will need access to an agency. Access can be of either a physical or virtual nature (just visiting the website will not be enough). Thus, you may look at an agency in Washington D.C. if you are able to contact individuals that will talk with you. However, this assignment is usually much easier if you look at an agency that has a physical presence in this area. The assignment consists of examining the agency and writing a report on your findings. You will need to include interviews with at least two agency eaplaess one of which must beam “anager.” itopics for inclusion in your paper might inclucTe—aieney history, mission, future outlook, obstacles, political issues, interest groups, budget and personnel systems, etc.t Groups that feel any given member is not “pulling” his or her own weight should consult with the instructor. The
instructor reserves the right to add an individual grade component to this assignment.
