Discussion topic:
Do you agree that taxing or restricting the sale of sugar will reduce the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes?
Guidance and background information
According to the WHO (2018), the global statistics on diabetes are extremely concerning. 422 million adults worldwide have diabetes, 1.6 million deaths are attributed to diabetes annually and importantly a study conducted by Imperial College London and the WHO reveals a ten-fold increase in childhood obesity over the last forty years; and this is cited as a major contributor to the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes (Woodfield, 2017). In the UK a levy on sugar was introduced in 2018 to try and reduce the levels of obesity and therefore reduce the risk of children and adults developing Type 2 Diabetes which has direct links to lifestyle and diet. More countries around the world are introducing some form of sugar levy or restrictions on its sale in order to try and address this global problem.
The above statement provides some important information on obesity in children and the incidence and prevalence of diabetes.
