Coursework Two (50% Weighting) – SEMESTER TWO
Assessment Criteria:
The assessment is a visual presentation and supporting report.
This part of the coursework will focus on a particular hospitality organisation/s. Clarification will be given on this in Semester Two. The report will support and extend the discussion presented in the presentation.
It will address objectives 3 and 4 of the module:
- To synthesise the issues associated with achieving competitive advantage.
- To apply the key concepts as a predictive tool to aid the establishment of sustainable strategy.
Presentation (25% of the 100%)
The visual presentation element will include the following:
- It should last for 10 minutes. This will be followed by a question and answer session. Timings will be confirmed prior to the assessment.
- It should compare and contrast the use of operational tactics (for example: a meal experience, accommodation, service intensity, corporate activity or revenue management/pricing) as a form that aids in achieving and sustaining competitive advantage.
- It should relate to particular hospitality organisation/s and demonstrate the application of models and key concepts from a range of sources to support your argument.
Further details for the visual presentation will be provided in semester two, on campus moodle and in class.
In addition a supporting report (75% of the 100%) should be submitted that develops on from the presentation providing information on the following:
- The report will develop the key strategic directions highlighted in the visual presentation. The report must relate to a particular hospitality organisation/s and the issues associated with achieving competitive advantage. It should demonstrate the development of the application of models and key strategic concepts to support your argument.
- Factors impacting on sustaining competitive advantage should be discussed and the future strategic direction should be evaluated in terms of short, medium and long-term objectives.
- Risk should be taken into consideration in relation to the hospitality organisation’s competitive advantage.
- A range of source materials should support the discussion and evaluation presented in the report.
An appendix can be used to support report.
Report format
The report – should be typewritten and should not exceed 2,500 words (excluding title page proforma, executive summary and references). Students must use the Harvard referencing system, report format and blind marking procedure. In addition students should use a 2.5-cm margin with 1.5 line spacing and 12 font size.

Coursework Aim

Visual presentations as scheduled on Thursday 9st May 2019. Times tbc.
Report is due on Friday May 3rd 2019 at 1pm to the module drop box.
The assessment and presentation slides need to be uploaded to a drop box on Campus Moodle.
Resubmission Date
August date tbc
The resubmission will consist of a visual presentation and report related to
organisation(s) tbc. It will follow the same format as the original assessment.
WORD COUNT
The title page, abstract/executive summary, contents page, lists of tables and figures, glossary, reference list, bibliography and appendices are not part of the word count.
Everything in the main body of text, including headings, sub-headings, citations and direct quotes, is included in the word count.
Anything you consider essential for your marker to read should be in the main body of text. Anything that is supplementary or supporting material should be in the appendices. Regarding tables in the main body of text:
- A table containing mainly numeric content would not be considered part of the word count.
- A table containing mainly text content would be considered part of the word count.
NOTE
The penalty for late submission of a piece of coursework, without valid reason, is that the coursework will be regarded as a non-submission (NS) and one of your assessment opportunities will be lost. There may also a penalty for deviating substantially from the word length or for poor spelling and grammar (deduction of up to 1 grade point from final grade for poor spelling and grammar and deduction of 1 grade point for deviations in excess of +/- 10% of the specified word count).
Coursework should be submitted electronically via the designated Assignment Dropbox in the Module Study Area in CampusMoodle.

Before submitting assignments, you should check through it to ensure that:

Coursework received late, without valid reason, will be regarded as a non-submission (NS) and one of your assessment opportunities will be lost.
If the word count of an assessment is considered critical, then this will be reflected in the assessment criteria for that assessment together with any consequent penalties.
