Introduction
Overview
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been of growing concern in the United States, especially with respect to soldiers returning home from combat. While PTSD used to be simply looked over as “shell-shock” or “battle fatigue”, the United States began to really look into PTSD as a real disorder after the Vietnam War. Effective ways of treating PTSD have been developed, but virtual reality exposure therapy has been proven to be as effective, if not more effective, than the treatments preceding it. Having more tools to use for treatment is also preferable when dealing with such a wide array of individuals suffering from PTSD. Virtual reality’s recent advancements would make virtual reality exposure therapy a real, affordable option for many hospitals and clinics that help treat PTSD.
Scope
The white paper will cover virtual reality therapy and its applications to PTSD. The paper will discuss a brief history of PTSD, prior treatment options, and advancements in virtual reality for the background section. The proposal will cover a plausible setup for how to implement virtual reality therapy for use in treating PTSD. The main sub sections would include the required hardware to power the virtual reality environment, simulation software choices, and a discussion of the vital health statistics monitor. All of these topics will be presented, explained in depth, then discussed with respect to their impacts on the main goal at hand.
Discussion
Statement of Work
· Do initial research and determine feasibility of the solution
· Complete Prospectus/Annotated Bibliography
· Do further research, note important information and the source used
· Generate an outline for the paper
· Draft a rough version of the paper from the outline
· Make revisions or edits to the draft until a final copy is reached
· Add additional pages such as title, references, and tables
· Review the final copy before publication
· Publish the final copy
Schedule
Possible Difficulties
The main difficulty I foresee facing is that my topic is either too broad, or not broad enough to create a good white paper. Given my initial research, I believe there are enough references and topics to discuss to create an argument, but should I find that there is not, I will change my topic to satisfy my situation. The other main problem would be time management. Given the busy schedule I am keeping this semester, typing a rather large paper will require that I make time to complete it. I will handle this through following my schedule, and working on the paper in the evenings when I usually do other things that are not necessarily school related.
Annotated Bibliography

This report discusses possibilities for motion in a VR environment, and how to bring VR environments to life. Such movement devices were not available before, but newer technologies are allowing for greater immersion into a VR setting. This report could be used to discuss newer advancements in VR that increases its efficacy.
Gonçalves, R., Pedrozo, A. L., Freire Coutinho, E. S., Figueira, I., & Ventura, P. (2012). Efficacy of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy in the Treatment of PTSD: A Systematic Review. Plos ONE, 7(12), 1-7. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0048469
This is yet another study showing the efficacy of VR exposure therapy, and could be used in conjunction with the other sources to really hit the point home that VR therapy is effective. Its efficacy and affordability warrants its widespread use.
Kronqvist, A., Jokinen, J., & Rousi, R. (2016). Evaluating the Authenticity of Virtual Environments: Comparison of Three Devices. Advances In Human-Computer Interaction, 1-14. doi:10.1155/2016/2937632
Kronqvist’s article discusses affordability, cost effectiveness, and immersion abilities associated with 3 view display devices. This discussion’s recent publishing could be used to write about VR’s recent advancements and different options available to suit different budgets and needs. This would lend VR to be a very appealing option.

This source’s discussion on creating a compelling VR experience is important in the current technologies that are being used in VR devices. Since a compelling environment is important for people looking to be rehabilitated, this article will provide useful data and ideas for the solution to the problem of VR PTSD treatment.
Rizzo, A. “., Difede, J., Rothbaum, B. O., Reger, G., Spitalnick, J., Cukor, J., & Mclay, R. (2010). Annals Of The New York Academy Of Sciences, 1208(1), 114-125. doi:10.1111/j.1749-6632.2010.05755.x
Rizzo’s documentation of “Virtual Iraq/Afghanistan” discusses modern possibilities for the implementation of VR to help soldiers returning home from the war on terror. While the article was written in 2010, mixing its effects along with evidence of VR’s affordability and ease of access would make a compelling case for its use.
