Midterm Exam
Read the Research article, Marital Conflict: Correlates, Structure, and Context (you must cite from this study). Use the following specific elements from the Fincham study:
P. 2: “Is Marital Conflict Important?
P. 2:“What Are Marital Conflicts?”
P. 4: “Don’t Research Findings on Marital Conflict Just Reflect Common Sense?”
Now, choose one issue from the section on “Seeds of Discontent” as your focus and research that specific area of marital conflict. Some examples:
Thoughts and feelings that connect to reactive behaviors (jealousy, possessiveness, insecurity, etc.)
Negative communication in problem-solving (blaming, accusing, assuming, etc.)
Anger during problem-solving
Reciprocating negative behavior with more negative behavior (payback, revenge, etc.)
Stress (financial, work-related, over-extended scheduling, etc.)

The Introduction (information on how crisis in marriage is viewed; the first paragraph on p. 20)
Coontz text Chapter 17; effects of social change related to role conflicts, media image of gender roles, potential social perceptions that can lead to conflict within the relationship (expectations & media image portrayals that can set either partner up for conflict)
Requirements:
Cite from the original research article; find a minimum of 2 additional studies, cite appropriately from the Coontz text if appropriate & Chapter 3 of the Gubrium & Holstein text
