My capstone presentation focuses on the mental health impact of totalitarian regimes. I use the classic book, 1984 by George Orwell, and the scholarly research of Riadh T. Abed of the Rotherham District General Hospital in the U.K. to examine the similarities.
This relates to our studies on the importance of developing individualism.
Tyranny and Mental Health
– Article outlines the mental health problems of those living under totalitarian governments.
– The problem deserves the “attention of health professionals, given the widespread and devastating effects tyrannical regimes can have on the lives of their victims” (Abed pars. 1).
– The article documents the effects of the rule of Saddam Hussein on the people of Iraq. The regime of Saddam Hussein “engaged in political assassinations of its opponents, detention without trial…ethnic cleansing…and by 1977, civil society ceased to exist” (Abed pars 13).
– Connection:
> The characteristics of totalitarian regimes as outlined by Riadh T. Abed are compared to those experienced by Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four. The goal is to reveal some of the mental struggles many around the world face today. In the novel, Winston struggles to find his voice, to find a sense of self, to be an individual. Both the novel and the article show the mental toll this takes on an individual.
– Similarities:
> Tyranny and Mental Health
* “Totalitarian regimes remove protection for the individual from the state” (Abed, pars. 6)
* Totalitarian regimes “destroy trust between individuals by rendering every citizen a potential informer” (Abed, pars. 7)
* Totalitarian regimes use “terror as a routine instrument of governance” (Abed, pars. 6).
* Totalitarian regimes must have a “condition of continuous internal or external war against real and imaginary enemies” (Abed, pars. 10).
* Totalitarian regimes perpetuate a state of “misery and deprivation” (Abed, pars. 8).
* Totalitarian regimes oppress citizens by removing “autonomous decision- making and action in whole areas of life” (Abed, pars. 6).
> Nineteen Eighty-Four
* Winston purchases a diary from a junk shop. He hides from the all-seeing telescreen and writes his thoughts, “Down with Big Brother” (Orwell 19).
* Winston fears his neighbor’s children who are training as junior Spies for the Party. At first, he fears Julia, “She may be an agent of the Thought Police”(Orwell 11).
* Winston is eventually arrested and tortured for seven years. He snaps at the threat of rats eating the flesh on his face.
* Winston is constantly trying to figure out what countries Oceania is at war with at the moment (Orwell 181).
* The novel has numerous references to the sights and smells of food. Winston and Julia enjoy food purchased on the black market.
* The Party seeks to eliminate the need for the love relationship between men and women in marriage. The Party’s eventual goal is to produce children entirely through artificial insemination.
– Why Should I Care About This?
> Millions of people in other countries live under the oppression of totalitarian regimes
> Those who escape may suffer from “posttraumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety” (Shin, et al pars. 2)
> We should speak out for those who do not have a voice.
> We should value our rights, vote, and participate in our government.

I gave a lower rating on the service because, a notification from the support team went out but it did not come to my email address. Had I not looked earlier on the website, then I would have been penalized for not turning in my paper on time. On my profile, I have a phone# and I also have an email address. Please set up a system to text or email new messages or notifications from the writer or support team. This will ensure that the order is processed in a timely manner. With the new and upcoming technology, this seems like it should be an easy fix to have a tool built in the website to email or text notifications of changes to orders. This is no reflection to the support team. I see this as a system issue and not a support team issue.
