Like Water for Chocolate
Writing Project 2
The writing projects are meant as a showcase for your ability to think critically and creatively about the assigned readings. Whether it’s through an evidence-based argument or a work of art, you will exhibit your strengths as a perceptive reader and analytical writer.
Your thesis-driven essay must be a minimum of 1,000 words in length. Your essay should be built around original argument and provide evidence/support from the readings. Essays should follow MLA format for citations.
Like Water for Chocolate is considered to be an example of “magical realism.” Look up this term and discuss how and why you think the author combined fantasy and reality and, citing specific examples from the book, discuss whether using this genre was a good idea. Remember—most of your paper should be analysis/discussion, not summary!
Be sure your argument is clearly stated and that you refer clearly and often to the original text for evidence and support of your argument. You also need to be sure to follow the guidelines noted on this handout and that you understand and have incorporated some of the ideas and concepts discussed in handouts and forums.
