Leadership/Management-Quality Improvement Project: Students in NU 450 will examine a current quality improvement topic (Marquis & Huston, 2017, Chapter 23) in their area of interest. The overall goal is for the student to demonstrate integration of evidence-based practice with future collaboration and leadership in identifying and planning a conceptual project that meets the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (see index for references in text) recommendations for quality improvement. (pp. 621-622). Students will identify an appropriate area of interest and focus. The student will synthesize literature on the topic.
This is an APA written assignment. The content should be 8-10 pages, not including the title page and reference page. The student should note at least 8 references, including five evidence- based practice journal articles supporting the project.
This Leadership/Management Quality Improvement Project correlates with the Institute of Medicine framework to focus on safe, quality patient-focused care with the competencies for educating health care providers. The healthcare providers are interdisciplinary teams that provide patient-centered care that is based on evidence-based practice, information technology, and quality improvement.
Students will address specific nursing-sensitive performance measures that are within their “area of interest/field”. The nursing-sensitive performance measures are also named as “never events” and “pay for performance” are an example of a topic or interest the student may choose. Specific examples are falls, medication errors, catheter related urinary tract infections, ventilator associated pneumonia, pressure ulcers, vaccines, nursing education, community, education, nursing interventions or needs.
In preparing your work, student’s note the following:
• IOM Aims for Quality (See text and other evidence- based literature. Remember the text is usually a secondary source, not a primary source of reference. (You must use primary references)
o Safety Issue (Safety is a subset of quality)
o Effectiveness of care delivery as it relates to issue
o Efficiency of care delivery as it relates to issue (Cost/Benefit)
o Equity of care (Is there a fair distribution of resources)
o Timely (Is timing an issue with regards to intervention For example, if pressure ulcers are the issue and regular screening and monitoring of skin are strategies, are they time-sensitive. How does time impact the outcome?)
o Patient-centered How is the patient engaged. How is the patient a partner in their care. Consider fall risk, restraint use, pain management.

o Interdisciplinary Teams: Who makes up the team in caring for the patient population (per issue addressed, i.e. pressure ulcers. Falls with harm. Pain management.
o Information/technology: What information/technology is employed? How is information communicated. How does technology aid the patient care delivery process.
o Quality Improvement: How is this issue tracked. Trended. How are outcomes measured. What happens if quality continues to be below benchmark. How does this impact reimbursement. Patient satisfaction.
O Evidence-based: What evidence (research) supports the care delivery as it relates to the particular safety/quality issue.
