Looking at something from a different angle or in different lighting can completely change how we see whatever it is we’re observing. Those changes can bring a greater appreciation for, deeper understanding of, or a new way of thinking about whatever “it” is that we’re focusing on. For this paper, you are going to write about something that is common enough to the world in general and introduce us to new and meaningful ways of looking at it. I strongly recommend you investigate something that has relevance to you in some way; perhaps it is related to your career path or is simply a point of interest for you. Whatever the case, let your research serve not only the requirements of the class but serve you as well.
“You” must be involved in the research discussion. What this means is that you will connect your discoveries and insights to your own experiences, feelings, and ideas as appropriate. “I” will appear often in your paper. Your goal is to integrate your researched information with your own voice and ideas, creating a cohesive and thoughtful paper that offers innovative ways of looking at something and deriving meaning from that new perspective. In short, your paper will:
Establish what “it” is that you are investigating and how “it” is typically seen and understood. Use research to support how “it” is typically seen. You can use personal experiences/observations in addition to your research. Show us new ways of looking at “it.” Use research as well as your own ideas and thoughts to explain how this new perspective brings new meaning and understanding.
*I realize the second option is a little less concrete than the first. I’ll use some of your majors to try to make this option a little clearer. We have some fashion students. You have greater insight into what fashion actually means or does than the typical person; sure, we all wear clothes, but we don’t necessarily think about how they were made, what inspired them, or what statement they make other than how we look in them. Perhaps you can teach us a different way to look at some aspects of fashion. We have at least one culinary student. Again, we all eat food, but we probably mainly consider its taste. What else does/could food represent that we are not appreciating? We have some athletes; I’m sure many of us watch or play sports on a less serious level than you (athletes) participate. What are we missing through our casual observance? What can you reveal about sports that can bring new meaning to what is for many of us just a pastime?
I will provide instruction on research techniques to help you ensure that the sources you use are legitimate and credible and to show you how to access the NCC databases.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (for whichever option you choose)
Essay Length: 5-7 pages (not including the works cited page; you need 5-7 pages of writing)
Use MLA format throughout the paper; I strongly recommend visiting this link to ensure your paper is properly formatted and sources are properly cited. . You can find sample papers, sample works cited pages, in-text citation models, etc. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html You can also sign up for tutoring in the Writing Center for help.
Include properly formatted works cited page.
Use four credible sources in your discussion; you will be evaluating these sources thoroughly (instructions will be provided). Two evaluations will be submitted in a more extensive written form via Blackboard; the other two will be submitted in more of a short-answer format via Blackboard.
Sources must fulfill the following criteria:
-Be at least 600 words -be up-to-date; generally, stay within the last five years (if you choose option two and the topic is not especially time-sensitive and you find an older, useful source, let me know so we can determine its appropriateness).
-come from an age-appropriate publication (no Scholastic News or other elementary, middle, or high school publications)
Do not use Wikipedia or other online encyclopedia types as sources for your essay. Those sites are helpful for acquiring background information but are not appropriate for use in your academic essays.
