For each of the three questions, write at least 600 words answering it.

1. Discuss the motivations that led Japan, first to its war in China, then to its decision to seize the Dutch East Indies, and finally to attack Great Britain and the United States in the Pacific.

2. Discuss the U.S. submarine campaign against Japanese shipping, its rationale and effectiveness, and compare it to the Japanese use of submarines during the war.

3. Compare the competing plans of Nimitz and MacArthur for the defeat of Japan. Taking into account both political and military considerations, which do you think was better.
