CULTURAL EXPERIENCE PAPER/Assignment Instructions:

Choose one option from the options listed below to become the focus of your investigation. To get the most out of this assignment, you should choose a group with which you do not identify.

Assignment Option 1: “Pop Culture”

(1) Watch at least two episodes of your favorite television comedy show that was aired within the last two years.

(2) After watching the episodes, identify any minority and/or underrepresented population characters, and write a three (3) page paper in APA format describing how any one of these minority and/or underrepresented population characters were portrayed.

(3) Detail (i.e., write about in your opinion and/or assessment) if the portrayal was accurate (in your opinion) or stereotypical (such as stereotypes of a particular underrepresented character being monolithic), and whether the character’s minority status alone was used as a source of humor (i.e., was this character placed in this show/episode – only because this person was a minority group member, and there was not much of a storyline about the character – other than being a minority).

(4) In your paper, make sure you include the name of the show, the overall show concept, any minority character(s) in which you want to discuss, and [again] how you believe the minority character(s) was/were portrayed.
