Establishing goals and creating a mission statement will help you
maximize your career development.
Setting Goals: Let’s begin by having everyone complete these
three steps.
Step 1: List an item that you don’t want in your career.
Step 2: List an item that you do want in your career.
Step 3: Write your goal statement using the SMART technique.
Here is an example of a complete response.
Step 1: I don’t want a job that is routine and boring.
Step 2: I want a job that requires me to keep learning and
growing.
Step 3: Within the next 1–2 years, I want a fast-paced career
working for a global cybersecurity company.
Your Career Mission Statement: Then write a brief description of your overall career purpose for the
next 5 years.
Example: My career mission is to earn my CPA and work as a financial accountant for a major
the accounting firm, providing excellent service to my clients.
Discussion Tip: In addition to responding to the three steps for Setting Goals and writing Your Career
Mission Statement, provide feedback on at least two classmates’ posts.
