Parenting Writing
Assignment Details
(100 Points total)
Purpose of Project:
A strength of a good family scientist is to be able to translate cutting-edge family science research into content that is understandable and useful to the general population. This assignment will help students accomplish this, as they will be taking a body of knowledge on a specific topic related to parenting across the lifespan and preparing a brief fictional workshop based on this content.
Overview of Project:
Students will work individually to design and present a brief parenting workshop on parenting across the lifespan. Students will pick a specific age groupand discuss specific developmental domain of their chosen age. The goal of the workshop will be to train parents on specific ways they can optimize development within that particular domain for that particular age group.
Phase 1: Literature Review
Eachstudent will prepare a literature review paper on their assigned subtopic which will serve as background research for their portion of the workshop. The literature review will include at least 5 peer-reviewed research journal articles and will involve summarizing and synthesizing current research on the topic and incorporating appropriate theories into their synthesis. Research articles must be related to the specific topic and age group that each student is assigned toand must befrom within the last 10 years. Students will not receive credit for articles that do not meet these minimum guidelines. If you are in doubt about the appropriateness of an article, ask the instructor before you include it in your paper. Use the textbook as an additional reference, especially when describing your theoretical framework, but still need an additional 5 peer-reviewed journal articles.
Please make headers to keep organized. Ex: Summaries, Introduction of Theoretical Frameworks, and then a Synthesis of Article (see these listed below in the rubric). Then talk about each of the 5 articles and the textbook within each of the headers.
Summary should be 1st level header then purpose, methods, etc should be 2nd level headers
Grading Rubric for Phase 1:
Summary of each research journal article (Including purpose, methods, theoretical framework, key findings, and implications for parenting. A screenshot of the first page is also included at the end of the paper) (6 points per article) | 30 pts |
Introduction of Theoretical Framework (Explain which theoretical framework you are using and briefly describe that theory) you can talk about one theory if you want. See textbook for theories | 20 pts |
Synthesis of articles, applying your chosen theoretical framework to the synthesis (Summary of big ideas that can be drawn from all articles collectively, using your chosen theory to guide/organize your discussion) | 15 pts |
APA formatting (Following 7th edition, including title page, running head, page numbers, reference page, in-text citations) | 10 pts |
Total for Phase 1 | 75 pts |
Phase 2: Parenting Workshop
Each student will develop a fictional parenting workshop (15-20 minutes long) aimed at parenting your assigned age group. Students should include a detailed description of their workshop as well as materials they would use to make this successful.
Parenting workshops typically include handouts and/or activities. Make sure to discuss what additional elements you would include in your fictional workshop. Visuals should be used in this section and can include pictures, drawing, or various other creative entities.
Grading Rubric for Phase 2:
Fictional preparation of multi-media workshop materials (Students should discuss items that would prepare for a multi-media portion of the presentation, including key points drawn from their literature review. Fictional workshop materials will be graded on content and creativity.) | 15 pts |
Fictional handout preparation (Each group should prepare a combined handout on their group topic, with each student contributing their portion of the content. Handouts will be graded on content and format.) | 10 pts |
Total for Phase 2 | 25 pts |
*Please note: I do not expect you to create a full handout or presentation for your “workshop”. However, I am looking for evidence that you have thought about ways in which you could do these things as well as ways you would showcase creativity, emphasize certain content, and keep your audience engaged!*
